Description : Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Charles Simic has done more than anyone since Czeslaw Milosz to introduce English-language readers to the greatest modern Slavic poets. In Oranges and Snow, Simic continues this work with his translations of one of today's finest Serbian poets, Milan Djordjevic. An encounter between two poets and two languages, this bilingual edition--the first selection of Djordjevic's work to appear in English--features Simic's translations and the Serbian originals on facing pages. Simic, a native Serbian speaker, has selected some forty-five of Djordjevic's best poems and provides an introduction in which he discusses the poet's work, as well as the challenges of translation. Djordjevic, who was born in Belgrade in 1954, is a poet who gives equal weight to imagination and reality. This book ranges across his entire career to date. His earliest poems can deal with something as commonplace as a bulb of garlic, a potato, or an overcoat fallen on the floor. Later poems, often dreamlike and surreal, recount his travels in Germany, France, and England. His recent poems are more autobiographical and realistic and reflect a personal tragedy. Confined to his house after being hit and nearly killed by a car while crossing a Belgrade street in 2007, the poet writes of his humble surroundings, the cats that come to his door, the birds he sees through his window, and the copies of one of his own books that he once burnt to keep warm. Whatever their subject, Djordjevic's poems are beautiful, original, and always lyrical.

Description : In the last century six discoveries altered the course of human destiny: nuclear fission, the microchip, television, the radio, the telephone and development of the airplane. This is the true story of the man responsible for two of them...and the incredible woman he loved. Sixteen year old Mabel Bell was deaf. He became her teacher and taught her how to speak. After they were married she managed his business affairs and later, when he became world famous, she handled all of his finances. He had a childlike curiosity about everything around him. He was an accomplished pianist, an author, lecturer, and an extraordinary inventive genius—the Venetian blind, the iron lung, the hydrofoil, aircraft tricycle landing gear, wing ailerons, a method of producing fresh water from sea water for sailors adrift, genetics, animal breeding, kites, airfoils, he founded the National Geographic Society, the list goes on and on. Yet above all he was a teacher, a warm hearted kindly man whom the almighty, in his wisdom, endowed with genius. It has been conservatively estimated that over a half billion people on earth owe their livelihood and well being—at least in part—to that genius of Alexander Graham Bell.

Description : Love for dogs is the source of The Silence of the Dogs, the story of two very different ones: Bonita was a street dog, while Spark was of a nobler lineage. They met and lived by chance or destiny in a strange, parallel world to our own. A moving story that celebrates the marvelous nature of dogs, The Silence of the Dogs expresses the tenderness and affection they feel and suffer because of humans. Often, when considering the ferocity of man touching the lives of most creatures,, it seems that the intelligence and nobility of dogs are superior to that of humans. With real settings, such as Caracas, Bogota, Miami, Chicago, La Crosse, and Madison, Wisconsin; and real photographs, Bonita and Spark come to life in this most emotional of stories, set in these times of human cruelty and social injustice.
